How to properly protect your skin during summer

Updated: Aug 2, 2022

Recently we do have lots of customers seeking for professional help for their sunburned skin. No doubt lots of people went on vacation for tanning on the beach without properly apply sun protection onto their skin. Consider recent the extremely hot weather, there must be more people got skin issues such as sunburn, dehydration, or fine lines due to over sun exposure. So today I would like to talk how to protect your skin from natural sun light.

Why would we need sun screen

As soon as summer arrives, people eagerly start their outdoor activities. Either getting tan on the blackpool beach, or hiking at the peak district, or even have a barbecue party in their own garden, people just enjoy every minuties outside their house. However, not everyone do realise sun protection should be their top priority when they exposure under the beautiful sunshine. Dr. A Hutton, a Dermatologist from London, says it's important to remember: "There is no such thing as a health tan. The best thing you can do to keep your skin looking young and healthy and prevent fine lines and wrinkles is to use sunscreen on your face daily." So sun protection must be done properly every day for avoiding harmful UV damage your skin.

In natural sun light, the UV radiation is classified into three primary types:

1. UV-A: 315-400 nm.

2. UV-B: 280-315 nm.

3. UV-C: 250-280 nm.

Almost all of the UV radiation that reaches to earth is UV-A, though some UV-B radiation reaches earth as well. UV-C reaches the ground so little so it can be ignored. UVA and UVB radiation can both affect health, but UV-A penetrates deeper into the skin and is more constant throughout the year.

UV-A can increase the matrix metalloproteinases in the skin and degrade the collagen, thereby causing the skin to darken tone, pigmentation, acne, roughness, and wrinkles, finally resulting in skin aging. Furthermore, Excessive UV-A also suppresses immune system function, which in worst case producing skin cancer. UV-B can cause skin redness, blisters, and skin aging, which is commonly referred to as sunburn.

How can we properly have sun protection

The best way to deal with sun damage is not to get it in the first place. Because even if you’re able to lighten your dark spots and heal your latest burn — you can’t undo the increased risk of skin cancer that sun damage has delivered. The damage is done, but you can make an effort to prevent future damage.

1. Cover up is a good choices. You can start by protecting your eye areas with a pair of stylish sunglasses that have 99% to 100% UV absorption. Broad-brimmed hats and dark and tightly woven clothes are a couple of other ways to really keep those harmful rays away.

2. Sunscreen products are also essential items for most of people during summer. However, it is important to choose correct sun screen. These products are mainly based on two things: SPF value and PA value. The SPF value is simply the time multiple that the skin can resist ultraviolet rays. There is a very common calculation method: the average middle tone skin can withstand the sun for 15 minutes without being sunburned. The PA value refers to the effective degree of UVA protection. The effective protection time of PA+ is about 4 hours, and the effective protection time of PA++ is about 8 hours. The more "+", the better the effect of anti-UVA.

The importance of post-repair after sun exposure

Post-sun repair is a very important thing which many people just ignore if they don't got sunburn issue. As long as you are exposed to the sun, your skin needs an after-sun repair. Maybe you didn't see the sunburn, but the damage of ultraviolet rays happens quietly underneath your skin which you can't see.

When exposed to UV rays, the skin automatically produces a large amount of melanin to absorb UV rays. Melanin will be oxidized by oxygen free radicals generated by UVA to darker oxidized melanin, redistributed, and the skin tone will immediately turn darker, which is what we often call tanning.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays will also produce a large number of free radicals, release inflammatory factors, damage collagen, and even break DNA strands. Therefore, if you go out every day, especially after being exposed to the sun, you must have post sun repair in time for reducing further damage to the skin, slow down skin photoaging, and prevent related skin diseases.
