Shaving, Threading, Waxing, or Laser? Things you should know about Hair Removal

Updated: May 16, 2022

In Beauty Bee, recently there were more customers called in to booking hair removal treatments. As summer is on it's way to us, we all want to get our body ready for the holiday season. By talking to them, I found that most people didn't realize that different hair removal methods bringing different results, and some people are not even clear about what kind of hair removal effect they are pursuing. So here I would like to tell you some difference about these hair removal methods. I hope everyone can find the hair removal method that suits them.

We all know unwanted body hair is the major concern for both men and women. Most of us spend lots of money and time on temporary hair removal solutions such as shaving, threading, waxing, or even laser treatment etc. So what's the most suitable hair removal method for you? Let me help you clear your mind.

1. Shaving. The good thing about shaving is this is the affordable way to deal with unwanted hair as you can DIY. The only cost probably is purchasing razor blade. A classic Gillette Venus Spa Breeze Razor Blade only cost you approximatly £12. But is shaving really the cheapest option? Why lots of people still choose waxing hair removal? Let's take a look of this.

With shaving hairs grows back much faster with shaving, though - within 3 days to maximum a week. eventually the hair will always grow back. And if you shave your body hair for a long itme, there is a bigger chance your hair will become more coarse. Furthermore, shaving may not as cheap as you think. More areas you shaving, more frequently blade need be replaced. For example, if you shave bikini area and full legs twice a week, you need replace the blade approximately once per week. Plus this is an DIY work so there is big chance you may cut yourself. In my opinion, shaving won't be my first choice for remove hair.

2. Theading. Threading come with waxing are two common brows shaping services supplied within lots of Beauty Salon. Threading involves pinching the hair between two cotton strings that pull each strand of hair up and out of the follicle. The good things about theading is it has less contact with skin, which means less chance of irritation and burnt. For certain people, theading may be is better choice. For example, if you got sensitive skin, or if you are using anti-aging products such as retinol around your eyes, you may be more likely to suffer irritation from waxing than threading. If you do get a little pink spot from threading, it usually goes away within couple of hours. Furthermore, you won't suffer from any chemical or allergic reactions with theading.

On the other hand, theading is not perfect. Threading is extremely damaging to the hair follicle. It tears the follicle if hair is removed. That's why it is so painful. And there is a chance that hair won't actually be removed at all but just broken off at the skin's surface, this will cause hair grow in different directions. With my opinion, I won't recommond thearding your brows unless you got extrimly sensitive sin.

3. Waxing. Today, waxing seems to be the most widely known hair-removal method. Even lasers are becoming more common and effective as technology advances, they're not exactly sensible for all types of hair removal. For example eyebrow shaping, the brow shape trends come and go, you won't be able to easily change your brows shape after taking a permanent laser to your brows. With good quality wax applied on your skin, it is much more gentle on hair follicles and skin. Waxing also lubricate follicles and create a barrier between the wax and skin.

The disadvantage of waxing is that it doesn't come with permanent result. In general the waxing result can last between 4 and 6 weeks time. Waxing can sometimes have mild side effects such as redness and irritation, rashes, ingrown hairs, allergic reactions, and sun sensitivity. But it won't last more than 48 hours.

4. Laser Treatment. Laser hair removal was developed from 1960s. After decades of development, laser hair removal technology has evolved from the first generation of Ruby laser and the second generation of Alexandrite laser to the latest generation of Soprano laser. At the same time, the home IPL laser hair removal instruments have also getting more popular in recent years (I personally believe that IPL is not a type of laser hair removal, because the intensity of IPL does not achieve the same effect as a laser).

There are so many benefits of laser hair removal, which is why in recent years it has a tendency to replacing wax hair removal. Firstly, Laser is a very quick solution as laser head can cover large areas. In my salon, most sessions only take a few minutes. the smaller the treatment area, the less time you'll spend under the laser. Secondly, laser is incredibly precise and can remove hair from any part of body. it ideal for people looking to tart and remove a few specific hairs. It works very well for the back and bikini area, which can be hard to reach with razors and extremely painful to wax. Thirdly, laser prevents infrown hairs which all shaving, threading, and waxing can cause to. Finally, laser is a semi-permanent lolution. While the treatment doesn’t get rid of hair forever (only electrolysis is approved by FDA for permanent hair removal, but you are probably not interested in electrolysis if you know how much pain you have to endure during the treatment), laser does drastically reduce hair growth—to the point that many customers won’t see any hair for upto 3 years, and the hairs that do crop up are often thinner and lighter in color.

Laser is not perfect, even with latest Soprano laser, you still see some disadvantages. Firstly, it need repeat treatments for achieving best result. You probably looking for minimum 3 repeating treatments with Soprano laser or minimum 6 repeating treatments with other types of lasers. In addition, lasers are more expensive for some people. But from a long-term perspective, lasers are very cost-effective.

In summary, I do recommand both waxing and laser as ideal hair removal methods. If you can afford laser, it will give you smooth hairless skin for upto 3 years. The experiences of treatment procedure is much more confortable compare with other methods. Otherwise, waxing is another option which have less damage follicals and less chance to have side effects.
